NEVER EVER (2023)

Solo exhibition. The Maltings Art Centre, Berwick-upon-Tweed, UK

NEVER EVER is a film work that follows a fictional television presenter and their crew as they travel across Northumberland, apparently shooting some kind of documentary about the region’s food and farms. The only problem is they’re not very good. Less Countryfile... more Country-fail. The presenter’s complete confusion in the face of almost everything they encounter offers both a comedic and poignant space for reflection, an invitation to think twice about some of the language, values and ideas commonly associated with contemporary issues of environment and technology.

As the film progresses, we start to see behind the scenes of our presenter’s world (both literally and metaphorically). A more reflective side to this slightly hapless character starts to become visible, a deeply sensitive and critical mind anxiously considering the hidden complexities of the words, politics, and places they encounter on their journey.

NEVER EVER was developed during a 6-month residency with The Maltings Art Centre and Newcastle University’s Institute for Creative Arts Practice and Centre for Rural Economy. The film stars Elina Bry in the lead role.
